You need an EIN to open a business bank account (most banks require it), hire employees, and elect S-Corp tax status. Free to get from the IRS website, takes about 5 minutes. Solo operators without employees can technically use their SSN instead — but using an EIN keeps your SSN off invoices and contracts.
